M.a.Giali : colors and materials

The Coin des Artistes (Artists' Corner) is welcoming this month the painter M.a.Giali. Entitled “Where we come from, where we are going”, the exhibition is inviting the viewer to travel through the artist’s play around color and materials.

Every two or three months, the Collectivité of Saint-Martin highlights local artists by exhibiting their work in the lobby of its premises. After the painter Edward Glasgow in August, it is M.a.Giali’s turn to join Le Coin des Artistes. The public was able to discover her work recently during an exhibition organized at 978 Sanctorum.

Creative since she was a child, Magali started with sewing. “I used to take a model and I would reproduce it. When it comes to drawing, I was bad, but I liked it,” she recalls with amusement. The love of arts has been following her throughout her journey, from Martinique where she grew up to Saint-Martin where she settled in 2007, passing through Paris where she has lived for many years.

ARTISTIC JOURNEY

Meeting the Dutch painter Ankie Terheijden was a revelation for Magali. She learned to use the brush and caught “the bug” of painting. In the following years, she tested, experimented, improved. Gradually, she has started adding elements to her paintings: fabric, gold leaf, jewelry, cement. She played with materials. A way for her to “bring painting into my reality,” she says. She also tried out different styles, different topics. Her guideline? Undeniably “the color”, and her favorite themes are women, Afro culture and fauna.

The works of M.a.Giali can be discovered from October 4th to October 29th at the Hotel de la Collectivité. A vernissage is scheduled on October 4th at 5 pm to meet the artist. On the theme “Where we come from, where we are going”, the exhibition will include a wide range of works that will retrace the painter’s journey and that will give you pause for thought about your own path.
