The Furies, a 100% local short film

The Ukrainian movie director Thea Marti, who has been in St. Martin for a few months, has shot her latest surrealist short film there. 100% local production. The Furies is inspired by the myth of the same name from the Greek mythology, reinterpreted through the Caribbean culture lens.

Being able to carry out video projects while travelling is a challenge Thea Marti has decided to take on. Graduated from the New York Film Academy, the Ukrainian movie director has lived several years in Spain and in Italy where she created her production company. Last January, she arrived in St. Martin by boat with the idea of learning sailing. While her travel mates were making their way to Dominican Republic, Thea Marti decided to extend her stay a little longer on the Friendly Island. Inspired by hurricane stories, she felt like involving local people to make a short film related to the island and its culture. “I’m a myth lover and I had already shot a movie in Roma about the divinities of fate, the Moirai”, Thea Marti explains. “This time, I therefore wanted to focus on the characters of the Furies”. Thus, the director chose to turn these three Greek goddesses of vengeance into a metaphor of natural disasters. The movie features the figure of Orestes, prince and pirate of the Caribbean, who, after killing his mother Queen Clytemnestra, found himself hunted down by the Furies; they are embodying earthquakes, tsunamis and hurricanes here and determined to avenge his crime.

FOUR MONTHS OF WORK

To shoot this surreal drama with horrific highlights, Thea Mari brought in a cast of amateur actors and actresses she had encountered through her research. In total, 10 actors played along: Christ Constandinou, Maxime Matser, Yasmine Essed, Milouschka Euson, Cati Burnot, Marie-Pierre Crespo, Ricardo Teixeira, Ashibba Gregoire, Rogers Constandinou and Kamel Fenzi. After several weeks of writing, casting, costume and setting preparations, and of filming all around the island, from Simpson Bay lagoon to Friar’s Bay Beach including Belle Créole, Thea Marti is currently working on post-production and on marketing her project. “It has not been easy, but I would like to thank all the people who have assisted me in kind, especially my main sponsor Orlando Jet Ski”.

Now Thea Marti is hoping that The Furies will be largely broadcasted, in film festivals of surrounding islands, but above all, here, in St. Martin, where she is organizing the premiere on June 24th at Rainbow Café and on June 25th at Cocky Turtle. According to her journeys, one day, she might direct a short film about the Three Graces, thus completing her mythological trilogy.
